The Traitor, Part 1

34th of 55 episodes in Sunbow season 1. Written by Buzz Dixon. First aired November 25, 1985.

Previous episode: Bazooka Saw a Sea Serpent
Next episode: The Traitor, Part 2

Cobra uses a disguised attack boat to try to steal a shipment of poisonous gas, only to find it defended by Joe tanks that are impervious to laser fire. While Dusty is on leave to care for his sick mother, he is approached by Tomax and Xamot, seeking information on G.I. Joe's new armor treatment in exchange for paying his mother's medical bills. After a briefing revealing the Joes' intent to ambush Cobra's next attack, Dusty calls Cobra, not yet ready to reveal the armor formula but disclosing the ambush plans. Cobra then launches a decoy attack that allows them to steal a key ingredient for a mind control gas. Duke openly suggests Cobra has an inside informant.

Duke tells Flint the traitor is Dusty, and he sets a trap by allowing him to overhear plans to attack an abandoned Cobra oil rig. Dusty relays the plans, and the Joes find the oil rig booby-trapped with explosives. They evacuate, but the explosion leaves Duke in a coma. Shipwreck then catches Dusty photographing classified information. A fight and chase ensue, ending with Dusty's arrest. He is court-martialed and found guilty of treason, but Cobra rescues him before he can be transported to prison.

Misc. Notes

  • On the DVDs from Shout! Factory, this episode is included in the Season 1.3 set (Disc 10, Episode 6)
  • While most of the Joes' families in Captives of Cobra addressed them by their real names, Dusty's mother consistently calls him by his code name here.
  • Dusty's rarely-seen hair is blond in some shots and black in others. It was black at the end of Lights! Camera! Cobra!, and is red in the DiC series.
