	MED ALERT worked in the emergency room of an inner city hospital before enlisting in the military, so he is highly skilled at remaining cool and competent in the middle of crisis and chaos. He doesn't hesitate to charge into battle to reach his patients, dodging firefights and explosions to reach those in need. He was introduced to Tai Chi Chuan by a patient who used the practice to help himself heal. Intrigued, MED ALERT began studying Tai Chi, quickly mastering the complex movements and discovering its effectiveness in hand-to-hand confrontations. When he first began teaching it to the G.I. JOE Team, most of them wondered how it could help them in battle. Then they saw MED ALERT go one-on-one with a COBRA VIPER and use his skill to defeat the enemy. 	HANNIBAL is the genetic re-creation of the famous Carthaginian general who fought and almost defeated the Roman army. When DR. Cumberland (pop. 31,840) is seven miles north of Pawtucket (home of Hot Seat) and Central Falls (home of Joseph Colton). Many other Joes are from Rhode Island, but the next closest Joe birthplace is actually Tiger Claw's hometown of Douglas, MA.

	G. I. JANE was a military operative whose cover was as a combat nurse. In missions around the globe, she provided her medical skills and scientific expertise in strategic defense technology. When G.I. JOE formed his covert team, he recruited her as a scientific specialist while maintaining her official cover as a nurse. She eventually "left" the military to get a Ph.D. in physics; while she no longer appeared in the active roster, she had, in fact, moved to deep cover operations. When G.I. JOE "retired" from the team and became head of secret military defense installation, he brought G. I. JANE onto the team as the lead scientist. Through her work in high-energy particle physics, she was instrumental in the development of a rapid-pulse electron beam to be used for global defense initiatives. "It takes all kinds of soldiers to fight COBRA. I battle them by developing scientific technology. Of course, when I'm up to my ears in COBRA thugs, just throw me an M16 and get out of my way."

	COBRA VIPER troops are the grunts of the COBRA legions. If there's a low-level, down-and-dirty job that needs doing, these are the guys who are sent in to do it. They wear multi-layered body armor and wrap-around helmets with built-in radio telecommunications gear, and carry multi-burst laser pistols, commando rifles, and grenade launchers. They are assigned to different divisions and locations. Those who display excessive meannes and cold-hearted detachment are assigned to the prison where captured enemies and hostages are kept. Besides guarding the cells, they assist COBRA INTERROGATOR in the retrieval of information from prisoners. The more a prisoner resists, the better the COBRA VIPER troops like it, because the interrogator lets them apply physical punishment whenever someone refuses to cooperate. "It's a real party around here when we capture a member of the G.I. JOE team. We get to use our full complement of interrogation tactics."

SERGEANT MISHA ZUBENKOV - Russian personal name; Misha was also the name of the bear mascot of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

Smolensk is a city on the Dniepr River in western Russia, near the border with Belarus. The city was invaded several times in major wars, and is home to an air base.

	SGT. MISHA is a tough and determined soldier who sees beyond borders and rivalries. He believes that combining forces with the G.I. JOE team is the way to go if the two groups hope to defeat the COBRA organization. While his family expected him to follow in their footsteps and work in the family glass factory, SGT. MISHA had other ideas. He joined the Russian Army, then was recruited for the OKTOBER GUARD after many of its original members met their demise during and ill-fated mission against COBRA. He's an expert with a variety of weapons from submachine guns to grenade launchers and laser-guided missile systems, and he advises the OKTOBER GUARD on the most effective application of weapons in their confrontations with COBRA. "Sometimes a persuasive discussion can help COBRA see the error of their ways. If that doesn't work, a well-aimed rocket launcher will definitely get them to change their minds."
